Say whether the verb in the following sentences is transitive or intransitive.

1. They grow vegetables in their backyard.

There is an object here (vegetables); hence, this is a transitive verb.

2. Rice grows well in regions with heavy rainfall.

Correct! Wrong!

There is no object; hence, this is an intransitive verb.

3. The teacher asked me a question.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb asked has two objects - me, a question. Hence, it is a transitive verb.

4. The fire burns brightly.

Correct! Wrong!

No object

5. They burnt the old clothes.

Correct! Wrong!

The verb burnt has an object - old clothes.

6. The car stopped suddenly.

Correct! Wrong!

No object

7. The driver stopped the car.

Correct! Wrong!

There is an object - the car

8. I gave her the message.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb has two objects - her, the message

9. My father bought me a bicycle.

Correct! Wrong!

There are two objects - me, the bicycle

10. Many trees fell in the storm.

Correct! Wrong!

11. They felled the tree.

Correct! Wrong!

12. The storm uprooted the tree.

Correct! Wrong!
