Fill in the blanks with an appropriate conjunction, preposition or transitional adverb.

Because is a conjunction. It is followed by a clause. Because of is a preposition. It is followed by a noun or ing form.

Because is followed by a clause.

Correct! Wrong!

It should be despite or in spite of.

4. We went out …………………. the rain.

Correct! Wrong!

Despite is followed by a noun.

5. ………………….. bad weather, the match was cancelled.

Correct! Wrong!

Owing to and because of have similar meanings and are usually interchangeable.

6. We cancelled the outing ………………….. it was awfully cold.

Correct! Wrong!

Use because to show the reason. Because is followed by a clause.

7. She has lost her appetite ………………….. her illness.

Correct! Wrong!

Because of is followed by a noun.

8. Clever ………………….. he was, he could not solve the puzzle.

Correct! Wrong!

Either as or though is possible here. Clever though he was means the same as Though he was clever. Clever as he was also means the same.

9. The weather was bad; ……………………., we went out.

Correct! Wrong!

10. He received prompt medical care; ……………………, he didn’t survive.

Correct! Wrong!

However is similar to nevertheless.

11. ………………… receiving prompt medical care, the patient died.

Correct! Wrong!

Despite is a preposition. It is followed by a noun or ing form.

12. ……………………. the chairman was ill, the meeting was cancelled.

Correct! Wrong!

As shows the reason. It is a conjunction. It is followed by a clause.
