Common mistakes in the use of personal pronouns

The pronouns that are used as subjects are: I, he, she, we, they, you and it.

The pronouns that are used as objects of verbs or prepositions are: me, him, her, us, them, you and it.

Note that you and it does not change.

  • She is my friend. (NOT Her is my friend.) (Here she is the subject of the verb is.)
  • I love her. (NOT Me love she.) (Her is the object of the verb love.)
  • She cheated me. (NOT Her cheated I.) (Me is the object of the verb cheated.)
  • She sat beside me. (NOT She sat beside I.) (Me is the object of the preposition beside.)

Exercise

Write each sentence using the correct pronoun from those in the brackets.

1. Neither my brother nor ………………. (me / I) have been to Paris.

2. The manager offered Jane and ………………. (me / I) a good job.

3. I run as fast as …………………. (she / her.)

4. He thinks that ………………. (we / us) two can win the doubles match.

5. Between you and ……………….. (me / I) there are few secrets.

6. Both ……………….. (him / he) and I are going for a walk.

Answers

1. Neither my brother nor I have been to Paris.

2. The manager offered Jane and me a good job.

3. I run as fast as her. OR I run as fast as she does. (‘I run as fast as she’ is extremely formal.)

4. He thinks that we two can win the doubles match.

5. Between you and me there are few secrets.

6. Both he and I are going for a walk.
