Defer and differ look similar, but they do very different jobs.
Defer usually means postpone or yield to someone else’s judgment. You can defer a meeting until next week, or defer to a doctor’s advice. Example: We deferred the vote until Friday.
Differ means be unlike or disagree. Two ideas can differ, and two people can differ in opinion. Example: My view differs from yours on this point.
A quick way to remember it:
- Defer: delay it, or let someone else decide.
- Differ: not the same, or not in agreement.
Compare these: The committee decided to defer the decision. The committee members differ on the best solution.
If your meaning is about waiting or yielding, choose defer. If your meaning is about contrast or disagreement, choose differ.
