Complete the following sentences with an appropriate word or phrase.

1. I am thinking of changing ……………………

When we talk about changing one thing for another, we often use change with a plural object.

2. I don’t …………………….. whether I lose – I am happy with what I have achieved.

Care is used without about before a conjunction.

3. I don’t ………………………… the result.

Before an object, we use care about.

4. I don’t take more than 5 minutes to ………………………… ready.

We do not use become to talk about deliberate actions.

5. The village ……………………….. I live is not far from the town.

Correct! Wrong!

That can be used instead of which or whom. But it cannot be used instead of when or where.

6. His recovery seemed …………………………

After copular verbs, we use adjectives, not adverbs.

7. I have bought …………………………..

Correct! Wrong!

Some uncountable nouns are plural and do not have singular forms. Groceries is an example.

8. The new job is not much different ………………………… the old one.

Correct! Wrong!

From is generally used after different. In British English, to is also possible and in American English than is common.

9. I doubt ……………………….. she will come this evening.

Correct! Wrong!

We can use if, whether or that to introduce the clauses after the verb doubt.

10. His success was ……………………….. his teacher.

Correct! Wrong!

We can use due to after ‘be’. Owing to is not usually used like that.

11. If you are not satisfied with their hospitality, you can go …………………………….

Correct! Wrong!

Elsewhere means the same as somewhere else. It is slightly more formal.

12. She takes ………………………. trouble over her work.

Correct! Wrong!

Especial is not normally used as an adjective.

3. I don’t care about the result.

6. His recovery seemed impossible.

8. The new job is not much different from / than / to the old one.
9. I doubt whether / if / that she will come this evening.
10. His success was due to his teacher.
11. If you are not satisfied with their hospitality, you can go elsewhere / somewhere else.
12. She takes special trouble over her work.
