The present participle is used when the two actions happen simultaneously.

The present participle is used when one action commences after the other action has finished.

Correct! Wrong!

He was too fat. He could not walk fast. We can combine these two sentences to get 'Being too fat, he could not walk fast'.

Here one action follows the other; hence, we use the perfect participle.
