Is “the reason is because” wrong, awkward, or acceptable?

July 22, 2026 - pdf

The reason is because: wrong, awkward, or acceptable?

“The reason is because” is very common in everyday speech, but many teachers, editors, and style guides consider it awkward. The main issue is redundancy. Reason and because both point to cause, so using them together can sound repetitive.

In careful writing, these options are usually smoother:

  • The reason is that: “The reason is that I missed the bus.”
  • Because on its own: “I was late because I missed the bus.”

That does not mean the longer version is always treated as a serious grammar error. In conversation, many native speakers say it naturally, and listeners usually understand it right away. So the real question is often not Can people say it? but Is it the clearest choice for formal writing?

A useful contrast is this:

  • Awkward: “The reason I left early is because I was tired.”
  • Better: “The reason I left early is that I was tired.”
  • Also better: “I left early because I was tired.”

If you are speaking casually, the phrase may pass unnoticed. If you are writing for school, work, or publication, it is usually safer to choose “the reason is that” or rewrite with “because”.
