What “in the soup” means, and where it likely came from

August 17, 2026 - pdf

The origin of "in the soup"

“In the soup” means being in trouble, in difficulty, or in an awkward situation. It is an informal idiom, and people use it when someone is mixed up in a problem that may be hard to escape.

The expression became common in English slang in the early 1900s. Its exact origin is not fully certain, but it is probably connected to the image of being immersed in something messy and confusing. That picture helps explain the modern meaning: if you are in the soup, you are stuck in a situation that has gone wrong.

This idiom is often used for everyday problems, not only serious disasters. It can describe financial trouble, work problems, or social embarrassment.

  • After missing the deadline, the team was in the soup with the client.
  • If you forget your passport at the airport, you are really in the soup.
  • He got himself in the soup by promising two people the same job.

In modern use, the phrase sounds conversational and slightly old fashioned, but it is still easy to understand. It is useful when you want a vivid, informal way to say that someone is in a difficult mess.
