Subject Verb Agreement Exercise

Fill in the blanks with a verb form that agrees with the subject.

1. Climbing mountains …………………………. his pastime.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the subject is the ing form climbing. When an ing form is the subject, the verb should be singular.

2. The writer and thinker ……………………. no more.

Correct! Wrong!

Here both nouns refer to the same person; hence, we use a singular verb.

3. The introduction of farm laws ………………………… been delayed.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the subject is the singular noun introduction.

4. The soldier and his wife ………………………… in that house.

Correct! Wrong!

5. A stitch in time ……………………….. nine.

Correct! Wrong!

6. All that …………………………. is not gold.

Correct! Wrong!

All that means the same as everything. Hence, we use a singular verb.

7. Barking dogs seldom ………………………….

Correct! Wrong!

Here the subject is the plural noun dogs.

8. The manager as well as his secretary …………………………… being interrogated by the police.

Correct! Wrong!

When we connect two singular nouns with as well as, the verb is singular.

9. The minister along with his aides ………………………….. touring the flood affected area.

Correct! Wrong!

When we connect two nouns with along with, the verb agrees with the first noun.

10. Many cattle ………………………….. killed by the leopards.

Correct! Wrong!

Cattle is plural and require a plural verb.

11. My trousers …………………………… too tight for me.

Correct! Wrong!

Trousers are plural in English.

12. Every citizen …………………………. a vote.

Correct! Wrong!

Use a singular verb after every.
