Adduce and deduce look similar, but they do different jobs.
Adduce means to present something as evidence or support for an argument. It is about bringing proof forward. You will often see it in formal writing, debate, or legal contexts. Example: The lawyer adduced phone records to support the timeline.
Deduce means to infer or reach a conclusion from the evidence you have. It is about reasoning from facts to an answer. Example: From the broken glass, the detective deduced that someone had entered through the window.
A simple way to remember the contrast is this:
- Adduce: offer evidence.
- Deduce: draw a conclusion.
If you are supplying proof, use adduce. If you are working out what the proof means, use deduce. They often appear in the same discussion, but they are not interchangeable.
