Use "but" because not finding him contrasts with searching everywhere.
10My application was late, ............... they rejected it.
Wrong!
Use "and" because rejection is the expected result of a late application.
11She looks reserved, ............... she is actually quite affable.
Wrong!
Use "but" because being affable contrasts with looking reserved.
12He took off his shoes ............... entered the temple.
Wrong!
Use "and" to join two actions that happened in sequence.
