Schedule is one of those words that often surprises learners because two common pronunciations are widely accepted.
In much of British English, it is usually pronounced SHED yool. In American English, it is usually pronounced SKED jool. If you hear either one, it is not a mistake. It usually reflects the speaker’s variety of English.
For example:
- What is your class schedule?
- I need to change my work schedule.
The difference comes from the history of the word and from how English has borrowed and adapted words over time. You do not need to memorize the full history to use it well. The practical point is simple: match the pronunciation to the variety of English you are using, or choose one and stay consistent.
If you are learning British English, SHED yool will sound more natural. If you are learning American English, SKED jool will sound more natural. In international settings, both forms are common and easily understood.
