Healthy or healthful: which word should you use?

June 22, 2026 - pdf

Healthy vs. Healthful

Healthy is the word most people use when they mean that a person, animal, or body is in good condition. You can say, “She looks healthy,” or “The dog is healthy again.” In modern English, it also commonly describes things that help maintain or improve health, such as a healthy breakfast, a healthy routine, or a healthy environment.

Healthful is narrower. It means “promoting health” or “good for health.” It is most often used for food, habits, air, exercise, and surroundings. For example, “The resort offers healthful meals and daily walks” means the meals and walks support good health.

The practical difference is tone and range. Healthy is the natural everyday choice in most contexts, and it is standard for both living things and beneficial choices. Healthful sounds more formal, careful, or old fashioned, but it can be useful when you want to stress that something contributes to health.

Older style guides sometimes preferred healthful for food and conditions, reserving healthy for living beings. That distinction can still guide formal writing, but it is not a rule in current everyday usage.

  • Use healthy for a person: “The patient is healthy now.”
  • Use healthy for common modern phrasing: “They made a healthy dinner.”
  • Use healthful for a more precise or formal tone: “The program encourages healthful habits.”
