Infinitive With Or Without To Exercise

The infinitive is usually used with the marker to. However, after certain verbs, it is used without to. Fill in the blanks with an appropriate infinitive form.

1. Need I ..................... the washing up?

Correct! Wrong!

When need is used as a modal auxiliary verb, it is followed by infinitive with to.

2. You had better ....................... her what she wants.

Correct! Wrong!

Had better is followed by an infinitive without to.

3. He began ......................... up off the floor.

Correct! Wrong!

The infinitive is usually used with the marker to.

4. Do I need ......................... any longer?

Correct! Wrong!

When need is used as an ordinary verb, it is followed by an infinitive with to.

5. Need I ........................... for the drinks?

Correct! Wrong!

When need is used as a modal auxiliary verb, it is followed by an infinitive without to.

6. I don't let my children ............................ up very late.

Correct! Wrong!

Let is followed by an infinitive without to.

7. They made the child .............................. the milk.

Correct! Wrong!

Made is followed by an infinitive without to.

8. We both heard him ...................... that he was quitting.

Correct! Wrong!

Hear is followed by an infinitive without to.

9. Could you help me ............................ this radio?

Correct! Wrong!

Help can be followed by an infinitive with or without to.

10. She was heard ............................ that she was disappointed.

Correct! Wrong!

In passive structures, hear is followed by an infinitive with to.

11. Did you feel the ground .............................?

Correct! Wrong!

Feel is followed by an infinitive without to.

12. He was made ........................ back the money.

Correct! Wrong!

Made is followed by an infinitive with to in passive structures.
