Interpret vs. translate: what is the difference?

September 6, 2026 - pdf

Interpret vs. Translate

Interpret and translate are related, but they are not the same. Interpret means to explain the meaning, sense, or intention of something. You can interpret a poem, a gesture, a law, or a person’s silence.

Translate means to convert words from one language into another language. This usually refers to text, although it can also apply to speech in some contexts.

Compare these examples: She interpreted his silence as doubt. Here, the idea is understanding meaning. She translated the letter into English. Here, the task is changing language.

  • Use interpret when the focus is meaning or intention.
  • Use translate when the focus is converting language.
  • In everyday learning, this difference helps you choose the right word quickly.

A simple way to remember it is this: if you are explaining what something means, use interpret. If you are changing Spanish, Arabic, or French text into English, use translate.
