Luxuriant vs. luxurious: what is the difference?

June 21, 2026 - pdf

Luxuriant vs. Luxurious

Luxuriant and luxurious look similar, but they describe different things.

Luxuriant is usually about growth that is thick, lush, or abundant. It often describes plants, hair, or anything that seems full and flourishing. You might write, The garden became luxuriant by midsummer.

Luxurious is about comfort, richness, or expensive elegance. It describes things that feel indulgent or high quality, such as hotels, fabrics, cars, or lifestyles. For example, They relaxed in a luxurious spa after the flight.

A simple way to remember the difference is this: luxuriant is about abundance in growth, while luxurious is about luxury and comfort.

  • Use luxuriant for lush natural fullness: The hillside was luxuriant after weeks of rain.
  • Use luxurious for elegant comfort: The suite had a luxurious marble bathroom.

If you are describing plants, foliage, or thick natural growth, luxuriant is usually the right choice. If you are describing comfort, wealth, or indulgence, choose luxurious.
