Observant usually describes a person who notices small details, changes, or patterns. It suggests alertness and careful attention. If someone spots a typo, notices a mood shift, or catches an inconsistency, that person is observant.
Observational describes something connected to observing. It is often used for methods, studies, notes, or reports that are based on watching and recording what happens. In research, an observational study does not assign treatments or control variables the way an experiment does.
The simplest contrast is this: observant is about a noticing person, while observational is about a watching based process, record, or method.
- She is observant and noticed that the dates did not match.
- The documentary used observational footage with no narrator.
- The findings were observational, so they showed patterns but did not prove cause and effect.
If you mean sharp at noticing details, choose observant. If you mean based on observation, choose observational.
