Where the phrase “black sheep” comes from

August 18, 2026 - pdf

The origin of "black sheep"

The phrase “black sheep” began as a literal description. In many flocks, sheep with black wool were uncommon. Their wool could be used, but it was less practical in a wool trade that often wanted white fleece, because white wool could be dyed many different colors more easily.

That difference helped the phrase become symbolic. Over time, black sheep came to mean a person in a family or group who is seen as odd, embarrassing, rebellious, or socially unacceptable.

For example, someone might say, “He was the black sheep of the family,” meaning he stood apart from relatives because of his behavior or reputation. The phrase is usually negative, though sometimes people use it more lightly for the person who simply does not fit the family pattern.

  • Literal origin: a sheep with black wool
  • Figurative meaning: an outsider in a group
  • Common use: most often about families, but also about teams, communities, or organizations

So the expression moved from farming and cloth making into everyday language, carrying the idea of being noticeably different from the rest.
