Tenses worksheet Exercise

December 23, 2016 - B1pdf

This grammar exercise tests your ability to use different tense forms correctly.

Complete the following sentences using appropriate tense forms.

Progress 0 of 12 answered
1My father ............... for a brisk walk in the evening.
Wrong!
Use "goes" because the simple present describes a regular habit and agrees with the singular subject "My father".
2We ............... for Singapore next Monday.
Wrong!
Use "are leaving" because the present continuous can describe a fixed future arrangement.
3I ............... all my problems.
Wrong!
Use "have solved" because the present perfect shows a completed action with a present result.
4We ............... here for four years.
Wrong!
Use "have lived" with "for four years" to show a situation that began in the past and continues now.
5I ............... a letter to my sister.
Wrong!
Use "am writing" because the present continuous describes an action happening now.
6He ............... his breakfast when I reached his place.
Wrong!
Use "was having" for an action in progress when another past action happened.
7We ............... him before.
Wrong!
Use "have never seen" because the present perfect describes experience up to now.
8I ............... the minister last week.
Wrong!
Use "met" because "last week" refers to a finished time in the past.
9He said that he ............... the next day.
Wrong!
Use "would come" because reported speech often backshifts "will" to "would" after a past reporting verb.
10The letter ............... yesterday.
Wrong!
Use "was posted" because the sentence needs the past simple passive form.
11The teacher ............... the lazy boy.
Wrong!
Use "scolded" because the sentence describes a completed past action.
12He ............... president of the club.
Wrong!
Use "was elected" because the subject received the action, so the passive form is needed.
