Amoral and immoral are close in spelling, but they are not the same.
Amoral means lacking a sense of morality, or being outside moral judgment. It often describes animals, very young children, or systems that do not make ethical choices. For example, a shark is amoral because it does not choose between right and wrong.
Immoral means violating moral standards. It describes actions or people seen as ethically wrong. If someone lies to exploit others or cheats customers on purpose, that behavior is immoral.
- Use amoral when morality does not apply or is absent.
- Use immoral when a choice breaks moral rules.
A quick contrast helps: a storm is amoral, because nature has no ethics. Fraud is immoral, because people choose to deceive. If there is no moral awareness, choose amoral. If there is a moral violation, choose immoral.
