Apprehend and comprehend look similar, but they are not interchangeable.
Apprehend usually means to catch, arrest, or seize. It can also mean to grasp something mentally, but that sense is less common in everyday use. A clear example is, The police apprehended the suspect after a short chase.
Comprehend means to understand something fully. It is the better choice when you are talking about ideas, instructions, lessons, or explanations. For example, She comprehended the process after seeing it twice.
A simple way to remember the contrast is this:
- Use apprehend for capture, arrest, or quick mental grasp.
- Use comprehend for clear, complete understanding.
So if an officer catches a suspect, that person is apprehended. If a student fully understands a difficult concept, the student comprehends it.
