Dove and dived: both are correct

April 22, 2026 - pdf

"Dove" and "dived" are both correct.

Dove and dived are both accepted past tense forms of dive. The main difference is regional usage, not correctness.

In American English, dove is very common: He dove into the lake. In British English, dived is often preferred: She dived into the water.

That said, both forms are understood and used in many places. Style guides, teachers, and dictionaries may show a preference, but neither form is wrong in standard English.

  • Present: I dive every summer.
  • Past: Yesterday, I dove into the pool.
  • Past: Yesterday, I dived into the pool.
  • Past participle: I have dived before.

A useful tip: if you are writing for an American audience, dove will usually sound more natural. For British audiences, dived may fit better. Choose one that matches your audience and stay consistent.
