Talking about Future

There are different ways to talk about future. For example, we can use the simple future to predict future. If an arrangement already exists, we use the present continuous to talk about future. Similarly, when both clauses refer to the future, we use the simple present in the subordinate clause to indicate future.

Fill in the blanks with a verb form that indicates future.

1. They ………………………… married next week.

The present continuous is used to talk about pre-planned future events.

2. Do you think I ………………………… the test?

Correct! Wrong!

Use the simple future to predict future.

3. I don’t think that she ……………………….

4. I wonder what ………………………. to her.

Correct! Wrong!

5. I ………………………… the Chairman tomorrow.

Correct! Wrong!

When the arrangement already exists, use the present continuous to talk about future.

6. I think it ……………………….

7. She ……………………… probably not like the present I bought for her.

Correct! Wrong!

We use will to make future predictions.

8. She will be very angry when she ……………………….. out.

Correct! Wrong!

9. You should watch that movie. You ………………………….. it.

Correct! Wrong!

10. What do you think will happen if she …………………………..?

Correct! Wrong!

When both clauses refer to the future, we use a simple present in the if-clause.

11. He is a friendly dog. He ……………………………

Correct! Wrong!

12. If the weather is bad we ………………………. the picnic.

Correct! Wrong!
