Transitive Or Intransitive Verb Exercise

Transitive verbs are those verbs that have an object. Intransitive verbs are those verbs that do not have an object.

State whether the verbs in the following sentences are transitive or intransitive.

1. She advised me to consult a doctor.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb has an object (me) and hence it is transitive.

2. Let’s invite your cousins as well.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb has an object (cousins) and hence it is transitive.

3. I waited for an hour.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb does not have an object and hence it is intransitive.

4. I received your letter in the morning.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb has an object (letter) and hence it is transitive.

5. I am going to send her some flowers.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb has two objects (her and flowers) and hence it is transitive.

6. He has changed a lot since he got married.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb does not have an object and hence it is intransitive.

7. Suddenly the child woke up.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb does not have an object and hence it is intransitive.

8. The loud noise woke me.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb woke has an object (me) and hence it is transitive.

9. Let’s discuss your plans.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb discuss has an object (plans) and hence it is transitive.

10. I heard a lovely song in the morning.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb heard has an object (song) and hence it is transitive.

11. Can you lend me a few pounds?

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb lend has two objects (me and pounds) and hence it is transitive.

12. The wind was blowing fiercely.

Correct! Wrong!

Here the verb has no object and hence it is intransitive.
