Miscook: meaning, use, and a simple example

May 7, 2026 - pdf

Miscook

Miscook is a verb that means to cook something badly or improperly. It is a straightforward word, but many people do not use it often in everyday conversation. Still, it can be useful when you want one precise word for a meal that went wrong.

If you miscook food, you may overcook it, undercook it, or prepare it in a way that spoils the result. The word focuses on the mistake in cooking, not just the final taste. That makes it slightly broader than words like burn or undercook.

  • Overcook means cooking too long.
  • Undercook means not cooking enough.
  • Miscook can cover either problem, or any other cooking mistake.

Example: I miscooked the rice, so it turned out both soggy and unevenly done.

You will often see miscook in dictionaries and edited writing more than in casual speech, where people may choose more specific verbs. Even so, it is a clear and correct word. If you want a concise way to say that food was prepared incorrectly, miscook does the job well.
